Interviewer: What motivated you to start your Academy tutoring centre?
Karen: I have a background, and decades of experience, in education, and saw the Academy as the perfect way to combine my professional knowledge and interest in business. But, first and foremost, I love helping students succeed – that’s what motivates me day in and day out.
Interviewer: Can you describe what your Academy does?
Karen: The Academy provides a comfortable environment for learning and offers tutoring in English, Math, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, from Grade 1 to University.
Interviewer: Why did you choose this particular geographical area to start your business?
Karen: Brampton is a great area to start such a business as it is a big market with many young families who are seeking to provide the best educational experience for their children.
Interviewer: Where do most of your customers come from, in terms of geographic proximity (major intersections/ landmarks) to you centre?
Karen: The majority of my students come from the southwest Brampton area.
I enjoy seeing the improvements that my students achieve in their grades and their greater appreciation for learning.

Interviewer: Which local Brampton schools do most of your students attend?
Karen: Centennial Sr. Public School, Ridgeview Public School, St. Brigid Elementary School, Morton Way Public School, Brampton Centennial Secondary School, Turner Fenton Secondary School, St. Augustine Catholic High School, Cardinal Leger Secondary School, David Suzuki Secondary School, and so on.
Interviewer: Describe your typical customer and what they want most?
Karen: My typical customers are Grade 1 to Grade 12 students. They are getting help in math, English, Chemistry, and Physics.

Interviewer: What makes your tutoring Academy different from other tutoring services?
Karen: At the Academy, we care about each student’s individual progress and learning. My tutors and I are aware of each student’s performance in class, what subjects are being covered at school, and what the student’s upcoming tests and assignments are. By tailoring the lessons to each student’s individual learning situation, we are able to best prepare them to excel at school.
Interviewer: What special things do you do for your parents and students?
Karen: We work together with the parents to keep them informed of the student’s progress, and areas of weakness, and we ensure that the student is provided the most suitable environment for learning both at home and at the Academy.
Interviewer: Tell me about one of your favorite customers or greatest student success stories or memorable moments since running your Academy.
Karen: When one of my students first came to my location in grade 8, she was getting 40’s in Math and did not even want to go to school due to embarrassment from her low grades. Since coming to the Academy, her grades in Math have more than doubled and she was able to achieve high 80s and low 90s after 8 months!
Interviewer: What would you like your customers to know about your Academy and why they ought to enroll with you?
Karen: Here at the Academy, we follow the Ontario school curriculum and the student’s tutoring sessions will cover the exact same topics that are being taught in the classroom. That way, we are able to reinforce and supplement the student’s learning and understanding of concepts, ensuring that they are well prepared to excel on their tests and assignments in school. Consequently, our students’ grades start to rise quickly and over time this leads to a dramatic improvement – which is very gratifying for our students and very rewarding for us to facilitate.
