Do you want to elevate your child’s grades and confidence? The Milton Academy, with Ragu Sundaresan at the helm and with his amazing tutors, are providing a tremendous tutoring service that prepares students by using our unique tutoring methodology.
Interview was conducted verbally, so transcript reflects natural, conversational English with conscious light editing versus what might appear in a formal, written piece.
Interviewer: Before we start, could you just please introduce yourself and tell us exactly where you are located?
Ragu: I am Ragu Sundaresan. I’m from the Academy for Mathematics & English, Milton location and we are located at 1155 Maple Avenue.
Interviewer: Thank you for that. Now, Ragu, what motivated you to start your tutoring Academy?
Ragu: Let me start from the beginning. Somewhere in 2010, me and my cousin decided to venture into a business opportunity. We attended a lot of seminars and franchise business shows and did a lot of research and finally, narrowed down to the education business being the most suitable for us. So, I came from the services side of the business. We decided to look for a business franchise that we truly believed in and that we were passionate about – in terms of the values it represented and the way it helped people. And so we signed up with every single educational franchise we could think of, did a lot of research, and finally, focused on the Academy because it used a tutoring methodology that we felt offered the most value to students!
Interviewer: Okay. Now, can you describe what services you offer?
Ragu: We actually bring out the best in our students by using the unique tutoring methodology which is individualized, with trackable progress. We also have the unique Super Readers program which was the winner of the largest reading intervention study ever undertaken in the US educational system.
Interviewer: That sounds very, very interesting. Why did you choose this particular geographical area for your business?
Ragu: This was too obvious for me. Milton was the fastest growing city in Canada, with the fastest growing student population.
Interviewer: So, that was an easy decision eh?
Ragu: Very, very easy decision. It was a no-brainer.
What I enjoy most is when students tell me that they did extremely well on a particular test or exam.
– Ragu Sundaresan –
Interviewer: Where do most of your students come from in terms of geographic proximity to your centre?
Ragu: Most of our people come from the town of Milton. I have students from all over the place – from neighboring towns like Belwood, Georgetown, Campbellville, Acton. I even have a couple of students from Mississauga.
Interviewer: So, they drive quite a long way to come to your Milton location.
Ragu: Yeah, exactly.
Interviewer: That’s very interesting. Which local schools do most of your students attend?
Ragu: Due to Bishop Reding Catholic School’s close proximity, we have the largest number of students from there. But I do have students from virtually every single school you can think of in Milton.
Interviewer: You draw from all the areas in Milton.
Ragu: All areas.
Interviewer: What would you say your typical student is looking for?
Ragu: Actually, I would say there are two typical students: One is the secondary school student, wanting to improve his/her grades in the shortest possible time or working on exam preparation. The second is the elementary school student wanting to build a strong base in Mathematics and English.
Interviewer: Because that’s very important to build that solid base when they’re young, and strengthen it so that high school is much easier for them.
Ragu: Absolutely.
We are passionate about preparing students and we provide tremendous value for your investment in education.

Interviewer: What are some of the most popular programs that your students are taking?
Ragu: A couple of the senior student programs – the Exam Preparation and the Jump Start programs – are our most popular programs. We recently rolled out our Super Readers program for the kids which is also quickly becoming very popular.
Interviewer: That’s interesting. What age group does the reading program cover?
Ragu: That is from the age of four and up to the age of seven.
Interviewer: What do you enjoy most about operating your tutoring Academy?
Ragu: What I enjoy most is when students come back and tell me they have received honors or that they did extremely well on a particular test or exam. That is the greatest reward for all the hard work we put in.
Interviewer: That’s good to hear. What makes your Academy different from other services that provide tutoring in your area?
Ragu: As I mentioned before I was probably the only one that has individualized re-trackable progress. We have a unique methodology. More than a million dollars went into developing our method; it is the most effective approach for improving the results and success of each student.
Interviewer: That’s interesting. So, a lot of money has been invested in the actual material. What are some special things that you do for your customers above and beyond the norm?
Ragu: Above and beyond the obvious – elevating our students’ grades and confidence – we do lots of small things. We give students Student of the Month certificates, which we promote on Facebook and Google+, so they receive public affirmation and can feel proud of their accomplishments and progress. When they score high marks, we put their tests etc. on our board at the front of our Academy so that other students can see their progress. And we work very closely with parents to monitor each student’s progress by providing on-going progress reports to parents at least once or twice every month.
We actually bring out the best in our students by using the unique tutoring methodology.

Interviewer: So, Ragu, can you tell me about one of your favorite students or your greatest student success or any memorable moment that you have had since running your tutoring Academy?
Ragu: I would like to mention two students. One was a grade 12 student who came to us in October 2015. He was getting 70% in Advanced Functions. His intention was to improve to 75% to 80% by the end of December. He received 100% on his final exam. His final average went up to 88% – far more than what he anticipated.
Interviewer: He must have been a very happy student. His parents must be proud of his grade.
Ragu: And second was a girl who came to us in her 7th Grade – joined us in the month of May, last year. She was extremely nervous and was last in her class. We did three months of tutoring in June, July and August, devoted entirely to filling her diagnosed learning gaps. She started Grade 8 in September. She was not only at the top of her class but she was tagged for the AP program in October.
Interviewer: That’s wonderful.
Ragu: Her parents are really proud about that.
Interviewer: What would you like parents and students to know about your Academy and why they should enroll at your tutoring centre?
Ragu: We have one of the most proven tutoring methodologies – which we have seen work here, again and again and again and again. We have some of the best tutors. We are recruiting students from all over Milton and all neighboring towns. We are passionate about preparing students and we provide tremendous value for your investment in education.
Interviewer: That’s really a very strong statement and I feel from what you tell us about how your students have improved and what the materials that you provide are, etc. your tutoring centre is obviously providing tremendous value to the Milton community.
Ragu: Yes we do and thanks a lot.
