Prof. LearnmoreAug 10, 2016

In a recent article in the Huffington Post UK, “Summer Learning Loss: How Parents Can Prevent The ‘Summer Slide,’ “  the well-known phenomenon of Summer Learning Loss is discussed and dissected.

If you’re unfamiliar with the phenomenon, the article defines it as, “children’s loss of knowledge and academic skills over the long summer period. ”

Some interesting statistics are cited:

-in 1 survey of 2,000 parents, 75% said their child’s academic ability declines during the summer.

-1 in 5 parents say their child is significantly less engaged by the time they return to school in September.

-50% of children are not looking forward to resuming their studies.

According to Dr. James Lane, “it takes on average six weeks to re-teach students material that has been forgotten over the summer slide.”

Dr. Lane goes on to explain, “Summer holidays are one of the key areas to focus on for parents, and it is time to address this problem before the consequences become worse. The more the summer slide is addressed by the government, schools and parents, the stronger a future our children will have.”
